Stretching from Mossel Bay almost to Port Elizabeth and formed by a 120 mile stretch of coastal plain, South Africa’s answer to the Garden of Eden is surrounded by mountains and forests and divided by deep gorges and rivers that flow down to the Indian Ocean beaches.
There is a great deal to see from museums, small local villages and up market seaside
resorts or ostrich farms, to superb golf courses and natural wonders such as the
Cango Caves and the Tsitsikamma National Park. Port Elizabeth is South Africa’s fourth
largest city and has a lot to offer the visitor from historic buildings and golden
beaches to beautiful countryside.
Just beyond Port Elizabeth are a number of private 'Big Five' game reserves in the Eastern Cape region, which can form a natural extension to any Garden Route itinerary and provides an ideal opportunity to add on a few days safari in this 'malaria free' area.
