Johannesburg is the gateway to South Africa and the country’s largest city and commercial hub. In the northern suburbs, particularly Sandton, there are numerous hotels and shopping centres and the country’s historic capital city of Pretoria is renowned for its colourful gardens and the jacaranda trees which line the avenues. A variety of sightseeing and cultural tours are available.
THE PANORAMA ROUTE
Four hours drive east from Johannesburg, a scenic 70km circular drive traverses the edge of the lowveld escarpment and truly deserves its title. There are many spectacular views to be enjoyed as the road winds over mountains, through pine scented plantations, indigenous forests and past several dramatic waterfalls. The route also takes in Pilgrims Rest, the infamous Long Tom Pass, Blyde River Canyon, Watervalspruit with its beautiful fern fringed natural pool, the Three Rondavels, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, God’s Window and Pinnacle Nature Reserve, named after the granite column that rises like a bony finger from the dense indigenous forests that envelop the gorge. At God’s Window a deep fissure in the mountain wall affords breathtaking views of the rocky escarpment and the lowveld 1000 metres below.
(For those staying at hotels or resort just outside the National Park, day trips and morning or afternoon game drives can be arranged.)
